Wellness, Function, and Serenity on Bainbridge Island
Some spaces are built to impress. Others, to restore. For designer Molly McCabe, Owner and Principal Designer at McCabe By Design, the goal for this Bainbridge Island bathroom remodel was to do both — transforming a large but dysfunctional primary suite into a sanctuary of comfort, ergonomics, and wellness.
“The clients were retired and very active in their community,” Molly shares. “They wanted deep relaxation, the ability to bathe together, and a design that would support aging in place — all while being beautiful and easy to maintain.”
The Vision: From Dysfunction to Delight
The existing bathroom had high ceilings, limited storage, and an awkward layout. Molly’s challenge was to create a more intuitive flow while introducing spa-like amenities that invited daily ritual and relaxation.
“We swapped the shower and vanity to expand the shower size and create better storage,” she explains. “The original tub was raised three steps off the floor, blocking the window view. Replacing it with a custom cabinet and bench allowed the space to breathe while keeping functionality front and center.”
The result is a serene environment defined by natural light, ergonomic design, and durable, low-maintenance materials that blend beauty with everyday usability.
Wellness at the Core
Wellness wasn’t an afterthought — it was the foundation. The clients’ love of tile, therapeutic bathing, and technology guided every detail, from the glowing barrel ceiling in the shower to the strategic placement of motors and access panels to ensure long-term performance.
“The materials were selected for durability and low maintenance as much as their beauty and function,” Molly notes. “It’s about creating an environment that makes self-care effortless.”

“I always aim to educate homeowners about their options,” she says. “Helping them define what truly adds value to their lives — physically, emotionally, and practically — is where great design starts.”
Looking Ahead
